BIO
Laura Gibson (b. Manchester 2001) is an abstract painter based in London, UK.
She works with acrylic paint and oil stick, creating non-figurative works often on reclaimed surfaces, including disused IKEA furniture. Explored through varying scales, she works intuitively and without preconceived imagery, allowing each painting to unfold in a single sitting.
Sound is an ongoing influence in the artist's work. Interested in the relationship between painting and sonic thinking, drawing on Pauline Oliveros’ theory, 'Deep Listening', she explores how silence and music can shape mark making in different ways.
The artist's practice is both cathartic and compulsive, it extends beyond the individual work into editing and arranging paintings in dialogue with one another, forming interconnected visual conversations that reflect a broader emotional landscape. Recent work explores the shifting relationship between body, gesture and surface through larger formats. and how operate as maps of her own subconscious; records of emotional states that can be revisited and re read over time.
